“The museum of Russian Merchants’ history”, Epifan village


The visit to the Museum of Russian Merchants’ History will give you an opportunity to plunge into the everyday life and mentality of provincial Russian town.


Working hours: The museum is open daily summer time from 10.00 am till 05.00 pm (from April 15 till September 30) winter time (from October 1 till April 14) – Day off is Tuesday. Clean up day is the last Monday of each month.

We offer:

-  Merchant’s living room or a reflection of middle-class notions of beauty based on a desire to show off the wealth.

- Merchant’s shop or the mart. Hummers and candies, vodka and laces, books and wine glass, museum souvenirs can be found and bought there.   

- Store cellar and the exhibition of “tare, weights and measures”. All the bottles, jars, pots and boxes are the real work of art of the 19-20th centuries.

- The playing program “Pay a visit to Baibakovs” – is an excellent way to know more about traditions of Russian tea drinking and to answer the question: “why tea is not vodka, you can’t drink it a lot?”.  In the end of the program you will be offered to drink tea from samovar with jam and buns produced in Epifan.

- Epifan town tour. Recently Epifan was a big town nowadays it’s a small village and historically it is connected with the Kulikovo battle. By a legend Nikolsky cathedral was built on the place where the Russian troops stopped before the battle.  The other legend is connected to Assumption cathedral: warriors who died during the back way to Moscow after the Kulikovo battle were buried on the place where it was built.  

- Inter regional festival “Epifan trade and Craft fair”. Since the 19th century in the middle of August on the eve of the Honey spas, the famous Epifan Fair is being held on the main square.   Honey of the last year, different handmade souvenirs and products can be bought in Epifan that day. During that meaningful day the breathtaking concert in the traditions of the 19th century will be held on the Red square.


Museum-Memorial Complex in Monastyrshchino village


By a legend it is situated on the place where Russian soldiers, died in the Kulikovo Battle, were buried in the mass grave.  Today museum complex consists of the Kulikovo Battle Museum, of the Temple in the name of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, of the Memory and Unity alley, the monument to Dmitry Donskoy.

- Kulikovo  Battle museum is the only museum in Russia devoted to the medieval battle. The reconstruction of Russian and the Golden Horde soldiers’ armory are represented in the exposition as well as unique godsends from the battle place and archeological monuments of the Kulikovo battle. For acquaintance with the exposition you can order a guide or use audio guide in English or Russian; 

- Unity and Memory alley is the memorial devoted to the heroes of the Kulikovo battle and the soldiers of the soviet army, who died on the Kulikovo field in 1941. Monument to Dmitry Donskoy is situated on the Alley; it was created by O. Komov;

-  Temple in the name of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built in the 19th century, architect is A. Bocharnikov.  Local legends say that it was built on the place of the mass grave of Russian soldiers, died in the Kulikovo battle;  

-  Belfry. Belfry of the temple was restored by donations of Russians in 2006. Belfry’s bells sound in Monastyrshchino village every day at 11.00 am and 02.00 pm to remind about the beginning and completion of the battle;

- Confluence of the Don and the Nepryadva rivers. This is a legendary place, it was mentioned in the chronicles, and it is also the main reference point for archeologists during exploration of archeological finds;

- Battle place. Archeological and paleobotany researches tell us that the main place of the battle was just in 1.5 kilometers from the “Wood of Green Oaks”. On that place more than 40 archeological finds were discovered. All of them directly related to the Kulikovo battle. A part of them is represented in the museum in Monastyrshchino village, and every year the number of finds is rising.

 - Stipa on the Kulikovo field. Stipa is a chronically symbol of the Kulikovo battle.  Small territories of Stipa are preserved on the Kulikovo Field as long as some other vegetation of the 19th century.

- “Wood of Green Oaks” is a legendary forest zone, it hided the Ambush regiment during the battle.


On the territory of the museum-memorial complex in Monastyrshchino village you can find a café, a souvenir shop and a visit center, where you can get useful information about our museum and services. In the medieval shooting range you have an opportunity to shoot from the arbalest or a bow, to make wonderful pictures in medieval armory or to take a ride in a carriage. 

The Hotel Kulikovo field is situated in Monastyrshchino village. There are 20 comfortable rooms, where you can stay for a night or for longer period to know more about the battle and Russian hospitality. Every room is equipped with a toilet, a shower cubicle, a TV, and a fridge.

The festival of national traditions “Bylina” and the “Bard Song Festival” are annually held in Monastyrshchino village in May.

Your attention is invited to:

- Monument-Column in the name of Dmitry Donskoy. It is the oldest monument to military glory in Russia.  It was erected on the Kulikovo Field in 1850 by the project of A. Brjullov. Weight of the monument is 110 tones and the height is 34 meters /111.4 fit.

- Temple-monument in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh.  The temple was built in 1913 by the project of A. Schusev.  In 2010 the temple was given under the authority of Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. The main subject of temple painting illustrates the scenes from the Kulikovo battle.

- Observation point with the view on the battle place. It is situated nearby the Monument-Column to Dmitry Donskoy.


In the third weekend of September the Red Hill becomes the center of celebrations devoted the anniversary of the Kulikovo battle. It is the most striking and large-scale holiday on the Kulikovo Field. During that day hundreds of modern warriors - Russian and the Golden Horde – took part in armed battle and bring the medieval spirit to that place. During that period crafts masters from all over Russia and abroad sell souvenirs, the songs are singing from many stages, medieval military and warriors are walking around ready to make wonderful pictures with the visitors.  More than 30000 people come to the Kulikovo Field that day.

The main State holiday of Russia - the Russia Day is also celebrated on the Red hill.  Many people come to see the weight lifter competition, tournament of kite pilots, concerts and many other events during that day.  By the tradition Russia day is held on June 12.

- Forgiveness well – the Holly Fount. By a legend Russian warriors washed their wounds in it. Here, Prince Dmitry said goodbye to his fallen friends. In 2001 the Forgiveness well

-  Sebino village - the homeland of St. Matrona from Moscow. There you can see a temple where Matrona was baptized.  

- Bogoroditsk Palace-Museum and Park is the rural palace of Ekaterina the Second.
